Volunteers Battle Weather in Building Habitat Home

Posted: Updated:

Edith Johnson just shrugs when she thinks about the obstacles Mother Nature has placed in front of her dream of a new home.

"Mud was something we used to play in," she told us. "Just have the chance to play in it once again."

Johnson is using work hours called "sweat equity" to buy her share of the American dream.

Volunteers from area churches are on a mission to build her Camphausen Road home in just two weeks, but Mother Nature's recent rains has caused delays.

"The foundation when we dug it had water inside and out, we were shoveling mud and had to pump for a couple days," Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Nancy Milkowski said.

Still the volunteers have faith they will succeed, despite the wet and muddy start. A ribbon cutting is still planned for June 24th.
