Inspector Calls Fire "Suspicious"

Posted: Updated:

The Erie Fire Inspector is calling an early morning house fire "suspicious."

It happened at about 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, at a home on East 20th Street.

The exact cause is still unknown, and crews are still searching for clues at the scene.

The house was damaged beyond repair, but so far officials don't believe anyone was inside the home.

According to police, the house was the target of gunfire just about 24 hours before the blaze, and they're treating it as a possible case of arson.

Fire Inspector Guy Santone said crews found traces of accelerant in the kitchen area of the house.

"We checked for accelerants, we got a couple hits on our machines, we still have to take it to the State Police to have it analyzed to know for sure," Santone said. "As far as the exact cause, we really don't have it yet."

It could take as long as three to four months to have results back from State Police.
