A vast majority of Toledo baseball players will continue to hone their skills this summer, taking part in NCAA-sanctioned wood bat leagues. A total of 19 Rockets are participating in various collegiate leagues in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Pennsylvania, including six players each in the Great Lakes League and Prospect League.
Senior OF Tyler Grogg (Lima Locos), senior OF Jacob North (Michigan Monarchs), junior RHP Alec Schmenk (Michigan Monarchs), sophomore OF Ryan Callahan (Michigan Monarchs), sophomore RHP Austin Schmidt (Dayton Docs) and sophomore INF Deion Tansel (Dayton Docs) are representing the Rockets in the GLSCL this summer. The league began on Thursday, June 6.
The 11-squad league has Ohio teams in Athens (Southern Ohio Copperheads), Canton (Stark County Terriers), Celina (Grand Lake Mariners), Cincinnati (Cincinnati Steam), Dayton (Dayton Docs), Hamilton (Hamilton Joes), Newark (Licking County Settlers), Spencerville (Lima Locos) and Xenia (Xenia Scouts), as well as a squad in Lexington, KY (Lexington Hustlers) and Carleton, MI (Lake Erie Monarchs).
Senior C James Miglin (Chillicothe Paints), junior INF Nate Langhals (Lorain County Ironmen), junior RHP Andrew Marra (Chillicothe Paints), junior RHP Adam Tyson (Butler BlueSox), sophomore RHP Caleb Schillace (Lorain County Ironmen) and sophomore OF/INF Dan Zuchowski (Chillicothe Paints) will compete in the Prospect League.
The 11-team league is made up of squads from Ohio (Chillicothe Paints, Lorain County Irormen), Illinois (Quincy Gems, Springfield Sliders), Indiana (Richmond RiverRats, Terre Haute Rex), Pennsylvania (Butler BlueSox, Slippery Rock Sliders), Illinois (Danville Dans), Missouri (Hannibal Cavemen) and West Virginia (West Virginia Miners). The league began on Tuesday, May 28.
Head Coach Cory Mee also placed senior RHP Cameron Palmer (Stark County Terriers), senior UTIL Zack Michael (Toledo Hawks), sophomore RHP/C Cory Finkler (Northern Ohio), sophomore INF John Martillotta (Chardon Blizzard) and sophomore C Lucas Sokol (Northern Ohio) in the Tri-State League.
The 12-team league is comprised of teams from Ohio (Chardon Blizzard, Cleveland Select, Northern Ohio Baseball, Ohio Baseball Club, Ohio Glaciers, Ohio Sting, Shannon Fenece, Stark County Terriers, Toledo Hawks) and Pennsylvania (Allegheny A's, Allegheny Valley, Pittsburgh Pandas). The league began on Saturday, June 1.
Rounding out members of the Midnight Blue & Gold who are competing this summer is sophomore RHP Kyle Slack (Battle Creek Bombers) in the Northwoods League.
The 15-team league is made up of squads from Wisconsin (Eau Claire Express, Green Bay Bullfrogs, La Crosse Loggers, Lakeshore Chinooks, Madison Mallards, Wisconsin Woodchucks, Wisconsin Rapids Rafters), Minnesota (Alexandria Blue Anchors, Mankato MoonDogs, Rochester Honkers, St. Cloud Rox, Willmar Stingers), Iowa (Waterloo Bucks), Michigan (Battle Creek Bombers) and Ontario, Canada (Thunder Bay Border Cats). The league began on Wednesday, May 29.
The Rockets sported a 25-33 overall mark in 2013, 13-14 in the Mid-American Conference. UT secured a spot in the MAC Tournament for a school-record fifth-consecutive season and ninth time overall.
