If GE sends 950 jobs to Texas, there may be a big drop in local charitable giving. The VA Medical Center, Second Harvest Food Bank, the Soldiers and Sailors home are among dozens of organizations who benefit from giving by union employees at the Erie GE Plant.
Through the Employee Community Services Fund of GE, workers donated 860 thousand dollars last year through payroll deductions. The company matches those contributions making a huge impact in the Erie community.
The Emmaus Soup Kitchen is one of the organizations that really appreciates the help. They receive $30,000 a year from the fund thanks to generous GE workers. The kitchen feeds 200 to 250 people a hot meal six days a week. "Those employees at GE are wonderful," said Sister Mary Miller of Emmaus Ministries. "They dig down into their own pockets and help us out of the kindness of their heart and not just us, they help dozens and dozens in the community."
