Former Toledo LHP Kyle Shaw has inked a deal with the Lake Erie Crushers as a free agent following the completion of the 2013 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. The Crushers are one of 14 teams in the independent Frontier League and are located in Avon, OH.
Shaw has also been penciled in as the Crushers' starter on the mound against the Schaumburg Boomers on Saturday, June 22. Former Rockets RHP Matt Kuna is currently a member of the Boomers.
Shaw experienced an outstanding 2013 campaign for UT, sporting a 5-8 record with a stellar 3.12 ERA in 15 starts. He accumulated 104.0 innings of work, surrendering 41 runs (36 earned) on 96 hits with 66 strikeouts. The fifth-year Rocket finished tied for second in the MAC in shutouts (2), tied for third in games started, fifth in innings pitched (6.93), tied for seventh in complete games (2), eighth in ERA and opponent batting average (.245, 96-for-392) and 10th in punchouts (5.71).
The LaGrange, OH native worked at least 7.0 innings in seven of nine MAC starts, averaging 7.2 frames during this stretch (March 22-May 16).
Shaw wrapped up his collegiate career fourth in UT annals in innings pitched (274.2) and fewest walks per inning (.255, min. 100.0 frames) and tied for 10th in victories (18). The four-time MAC West Division Pitcher of the Week also ranks second in school history in frames pitched (104.0, 2013) and tied for fourth in shutouts (2, 2013) and games started (15, 2013) in a single season.
