Checking Local Cherry Crop

Posted: Updated:

It looks like this year's local cherry harvest will be a mixed bag. But far better than last year, when frosts that followed an early heat wave, destroyed much of the crop.

This spring, some April frosts did cause problems, cutting the size of the crop at some farms. But other locations escaped the fickle weather, and the trees are full of high quality cherries, with picking expected to start next week.

Dave Wagner of Westgate Farms said, "Let's say I have a nice crop. If I get it all picked, then I will have a gigantic crop."

Kathy Mobilia of Mobilia Farms said, "Some trees there are cherries at the top and nothing on the bottom. Other trees have nothing. And then other trees are simply loaded."

Last year things were so bad, cherries had to be shipped in from other states for the annual North East Cherry Festival.
