UE 506 Says Company Proposal Would "Set Union Back"

Union leaders are telling members that company proposals to save jobs would have actually set the union back, responding to the GE announcement yesterday that up to a thousand Erie jobs would be lost with the transfer of a key production line.

In a flyer sent to members Thursday morning, union leaders acknowledged what the company had released the day before; that the Evolution locomotive assembly work would be transferred to a plant in Texas.

Those with knowledge of the talks that have gone on for two months tell us that the company's desire to re-open the contract was a key sticking point.

"If we re-open the contract when times are down, would the company re-open in times of big profits?" one asked.

The UE leadership also seemed to be responding to criticism both inside and outside the organization that the union could have bent more to save maybe one third of the at-risk jobs.

"Contrary to what many may think, (members or community) the proposals offered by the company would have set this union back. Our focus has not changed to keep these jobs in Erie.."
