Bowling Green State University women's soccer coach Lindsay Basalyga has announced the addition of Ahmad Smith to her staff. Smith, a former player on the BGSU men's soccer team, will join the Falcon women's staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
I'm very excited to have Ahmad on staff with us this fall," said Basalyga. "His experiences at BG as a student-athlete, paired with his knowledge of the game and eagerness to be a part of rebuilding the tradition of Bowling Green women's soccer, are very apparent. He is a great fit for our program."
Smith has spent the last three-plus seasons working with the Perrysburg Soccer Club. He has coached various teams including the program's Under-8, U9, U10, U13 and U14 club teams, and has planned and coached sessions for the Perrysburg High School boys soccer team as well.
"Grateful is the word that comes to mind in reflecting on the opportunity the BGSU athletics department and Coach Basalyga have given me," said Smith. "I am privileged to help lead, learn and grow under a coach with an impressive background like Coach Basalyga, and I am thrilled to be joining her coaching staff."
A native of Jackson, Miss., Smith was a four-year member of the BGSU men's soccer program from 2006-09. He played in a total of 38 matches, making 16 starts, during that time. His total of four career goals include three during his freshman season of 2006.
Smith was second on the team in goals in that '06 season, and scored in each of his first two collegiate contests. He scored the game-winning goal in his BGSU debut, a 2-1 win over Western Illinois at Cochrane Field (Aug. 25, 2006), and scored again two days later, converting a penalty kick in a home contest vs. Eastern Illinois. Smith also found the back of the net in a 1-1 road draw against Saint Mary's (Calif.).
