Neighbors Ponder Future with Erie Insurance Expansion

Posted: Updated:

The reaction is overwhelmingly positive and why wouldn't it be? A Fortune 500 company is bringing 28 million dollars to expand its campus in the neighborhood.

Neighbors say the decision by Erie Insurance to expand its downtown campus by renovating two empty buildings and building a third will raise property values, reduce crime and generally make for a better living experience in the East 6th Street neighborhoods affected.

"It's definitely good for the town, good for the community," neighbor Nick Taylor said.

But the decision to stay downtown close to its roots means that in the future the only way the company can expand physically is by buying neighbors out.

The company says it has no plans to continue acquisitions now with a two-year, three building project ahead but neighbors say the company is always looking for properties if it fits into the long term vision of what officers want the Erie Insurance campus to look like.

"They've (Erie Insurance) always been a big part of our downtown area, people identify with Erie Insurance here on Perry Square, so I think it's a win-win all the way around," Mayor Joe Sinnott told us.
