Part 2: Training for the Barber Beast on the Bay

Posted: Updated:

The Barber Beast on the Bay is a couple short months away, so if you're planning to take on the 12 mile obstacle challenge like I am, it's time to amp up your training.

The name of the race itself is intimidating.

Trainer Lisa Oberacker has pushed me past my limits time and time again, and as we took our sessions to the beach she raised the bar.

It's nowhere near your typical gym workout, but this isn't your typical race.

"You're really not used to being dirty, you're really not used to your feet being wet, you're not used to the sun hitting you, the wetness all over your body," said Oberacker. "It's important to  get used to it, after a few sessions you really don't get bothered by it at all."

Just because you're not in a gym doesn't mean you can't get the same benefits.

"You won't see any obstacles until race day so you don't wanna just flat out run or you don't wanna just do strength training. What you wanna do is do a long run for five or ten minutes then hit the ground do push-ups burpees something like jumping jacks or jumps."

One obstacle you can practice, is running the sand dunes; and we practiced those plenty.

As I struggled to make my way up a hill, with sand slipping beneath my feet, Lisa encouraged me, saying "be patient, figure it out, if it's not working find a way."

"You'll see (dunes) in two different spots, there are some right before and right around Beach 10 or so," said Oberacker. "It's about a quarter mile stretch of those sand dunes."

It can be pretty frustrating trying to make it up those hills, but you don't have to do it alone. On race day it's a team effort.

"It's definitely teamwork, camaraderie kind of oriented, where even if you're not doing the race with specific people around you, everyone's gonna be willing to get you up those sand dunes by grabbing you pulling you up," said Oberacker.

The goal for most people, including myself, isn't to win. In Lisa's words, "just survive." That takes strength of mind, too.

"I think people can really physically do it, but what they don't realize is they really have to think their way through it," Oberacker said.

As I rolled my way up a hill in an effort to top it, she was pleased with my unconventional move. Training is the time to find different ways of overcoming obstacles, both physical and mental.
