Duncan Ex Recants in Court

Posted: Updated:

She was to be a key prosecution witness with a number of incriminating stories about James Duncan during that weekend in 2011 when Nikkia Sawyer was brutally murdered.

But on the stand Shekirah Curry recanted, saying that many of the things she told police about the father of her child were lies told because she feared the police wanted to tie her to her friend's death.

"My life was on the line. My freedom was on the line. I was thinking about my baby," she told jurors.

Prosecutors then asked her about statements made about two teardrop tattoos Duncan has on his face, tattoos the defense has covered with makeup.

"Didn't you say they were for people killed and James said he needed another one with Nikkia Sawyer dead?"

"No," Curry replied. "They were for friends who died."

Earlier Judge Dan Brabender ruled that Duncan's appearance at the time might be relevant but his appearance in the courtroom isn't.

"Please disregard what anyone looks like here today," he told jurors. "An appearance may be relevant at the time, but not now."

Testimony ended with police investigators playing tapes of previous interviews Curry gave, in asking the jury if she was telling the truth then..or now.

Testimony continues Monday.
