Throat Cutting Suspect Apparently Roamed East 28th Neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

An elderly couple is hospitalized and a neighborhood in shock, after the couple is brutally attacked, and their throats cut.  It happened Sunday morning in broad daylight at a home on East 28th Street and Burnes Avenue, not far from the East side Wal-Mart.

The break-in and attack took place on a beautiful, quiet Sunday morning around 11am.

A man was taken into custody.  He is Adam Brown, 22.   Brown lives close-by, on Woodlawn Avenue.  Police say he entered the home, then struck an 81-year old woman on the head with a small gun.   Police say he then grabbed a butcher knife from the kitchen and cut the woman's throat and the throat of her 71 year old husband.

Brown allegedly took some cash, and a few household items and then left with the couple's car.  He was apprehended by police after the woman courageously called 911.

It took 16 minutes for officers to place Brown into custody.

Another neighbor, Barbara Gibbs, says she could also have been a victim. She says Brown stopped at her house first.

"The boy was here around 10, a quarter to ten, in that area of time. Pounding, not knocking, pounding at my door. Looking in my window. A big, huge window, trying to get in. He went down the street, and about 11 O' clock was when he must have assaulted this other couple," Gibbs said.

Police are not releasing the names of the couple who was assaulted.  Chief Steve Franklin says they are in serious condition.  The chief is also praising his officers on their quick work in apprehending Brown.
