BlogHer is an annual convention of women bloggers.
It's grown to be a very influential group, so influential that last year during the presidential election, President Obama kicked off the gathering.
BlogHer 2013 begins on Thursday in Chicago. Coca Cola has signed on to be a sponsor and has challenged bloggers to be more physically active and use the hashtag, steps to wellness, throughout the conference. The company's also giving away free pedometers to encourage participants to be more physically active. Coca Cola is one of many sponsors at the event.
Some health bloggers are very unhappy about a soft drink being a sponsor in relation to wellness activities so to protest they're hosting a Twitter party tonight with that same hashtag. The party will center around why they think Coke and wellness do not go hand in hand.
UPDATE: A Coca Cola Spokesperson responded to 13abc's request for comment with the following statement:
"At The Coca-Cola Company we share a belief that when people come together real progress happens. We support BlogHer ‘13 because it brings together diverse audiences and perspectives. It's in that spirit of sharing and learning, that women across the country have told us they want to know how The Coca-Cola Company is addressing challenges like obesity. This week in Chicago we're looking forward to sharing information on how we are offering more no- and low-calorie beverages, up-front and clear calorie information on our packages and in vending machines, and supporting physical activity. We also hope that people will join us during our "steps challenge" at the conference – more than 300 people have registered already – and engage in some healthy competition that supports active living. By working together with women, families, and health experts – we hope to inspire and improve health in communities everywhere."
UPDATE: BlogHer Founder Elisa Camahort Page added this comment about Coca Cola as one of the conference sponsors:
"We are proud to welcome back Coca-Cola as a leading sponsor of BlogHer's annual conference for women in social media. It's wonderful to have a partner whose diversity of brands, from Dasani and Minute Maid to Coca-Cola and Diet Coke, offers something for everyone. This mirrors the diversity of our community. We think Coca-Cola is making a valuable contribution to our event and the community, many of whom are avid fans of their brands."
