Erie Police Ride Along: Police Pursuits

Posted: Updated:

There have been a lot police pursuits recently in our area.
Erie and Millcreek police responding to 4 separate pursuits this month alone.

We rode along with Erie police Friday, to get a first-hand look at how they handle these intense situations.

They're situations that officers have to use extra diligence during, all while running with lots of adrenalin.

Millcreek police found themselves in two vehicle pursuits this week alone.
Both drivers were arrested.

And, an Erie police cruiser is damaged in the second pursuit this month, with the same man.

In fact, State Police say police pursuits in Pennsylvania have increased for the second year in a row.

So, we rode along with Erie Police Corporal Chris Janus Friday afternoon.
He tells us that vehicle pursuits often involve a very high degree of risk.
So when they're in one, they have to constantly balance the risk it presents to themselves and the public, against apprehending the suspect.

"We have to weigh public safety versus the severity of the crime that we're attempting to stop the person for," said Cpl. Janus. "So if it's 2:00 in the morning and we're looking for somebody that's wanted in a homicide, we'd be more prone to pursue, or continue a pursuit for someone of that nature, as opposed to somebody for just a traffic violation," Janus added.
