NAMI Gets Check from Golf Fundraiser

Posted: Updated:

The National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, in Erie County got a big check today from its fundraising campaign today, literally.

The organization hosted a "Fabulous Golf Outing" in June. With the help of sponsors and community support, including Lilly Broadcasting, NAMI raised more than $18,000 for mental health.

These proceeds go towards funding their services and helps keep programs such as the Family-to-Family Education class free of charge.

Family-to-Family is a 12-week course for family members of loved ones who live with mental illnesses.

"One in four individuals through a given year will have some difficulty on mental health issues," said Jim Martin, Chairman of the "Fabulous Golf Outing" committee. "People are realizing there is help, that it is appropriate, and they're finding out they can live normal, regular lives," he said.

That statistic represents 70,000 people in Erie County.

"This year's tournament was the "fabulous" golf tournament," said Martin. "We may very well call next year's "beyond fabulous."

NAMI served 5,500 unique individuals last year.

The free Family-to-Family education course starts Wednesday, September 11, 6PM at Gannon University. For more information, call NAMI of Erie County's office at 814-456-1773, or visit
