Another sign of back-to-school is the annual free haircut day near the Pfeiffer-Burleigh School. This is the 8th annual event organized by barber Michael Hooks.
Kids and their parents sat in lawn chairs waiting their turn for a free haircut.
Organizers also gave away one-thousand backpacks to children.
"I believe in a philosophy of always giving back, basically. So any way we can help out to make these kids' year at least begin better off, I'm here to help," said Melissa Hughes, a cosmetologist from Tony & Guy Hairdressing Academy.
"It's about making sure that the kids are prepared for school. And it's simple... Some people can't afford it," said Michael Hooks, barber and main organizer of the event. "So we have backpacks, haircuts, and more importantly, we have the community working together," he said.
Hooks says the event grows every year. He also took kids shopping for clothes and shoes earlier this week.
