Hispanic Festival Energizes Downtown Erie

Posted: Updated:

Many of our local heritage festivals have been around for decades, but on Saturday a much younger festival drew an impressive crowd in Perry Square.

This is only the second year for the Hispanic Festival, but it's already attracting more than a thousand people.

A local hip hop group brought the vibrant Hispanic culture to life in downtown Erie.

Traditional food was served up hot, and Erieites of many nationalities celebrated the diversity of our city.

"I feel that Hispanic people don't actually have a lot of events here in Erie so this is something big that all of us Latino people can come and celebrate together our heritage," said Carmen Lozano. "The food, the music, the people, it's just a great way to celebrate who you are, and us being Puerto Rican we're pretty proud and we like to show it."

A parade downtown kicked off the festival around noon.
