Sneak Peak of Tall Ships

Posted: Updated:

Ten tall ships will set sail along Erie's bayfront on Thursday, but a few people, including Marian Romecki, of Erie, and her daughter, Denise, of Columbus, got a sneak peak before the Parade of Sail, when a few ships sailed in a day early.

"We were home and knew this was happening and we don't live too far away," said Denise. "We said 'lets go! Let's see what ships came in!' Now we're here and have three ships to look at," said Marian.

Some of the ships were moored up Wednesday night, and others anchored in the bay. For those checking out the ships, this was a way to avoid the crowds this weekend.

"We're glad we came down because I know it's going to be crowded," said Marian. "So crowded tomorrow. Believe it."

"You can come up and if you want to take photo you can get right up on the ship and take photos of what you want to, without 50 people in the way," said Randy Stankey of Erie.

Stankey said Wednesday night was perfect to capture the picturesque sunset and ships anchored in the bay. Those pictures will come to life when the 10 ships sail through the channel.

"It's going to be hard to find a good spot coming in the channel," said Marian. "Oh that's fun. I've seen the Niagara coming into the channel a lot. It's beautiful."

As fun as it was to get a preview of these ships, people are still anxious to see all the ships sail in.

"I like the Niagara, and I like to see it sail, but sometimes just one boat's not quite as much fun to see," said Stankey. "Ten all together, it's like an armada."

Things will get underway with the Parade of Sail Thursday at 4 PM. For full a schedule of events, click here.
