Toledo tees off its women's golf campaign this weekend with an appearance in Illinois State's Redbird Invitational for a third-straight season. The Rockets will be looking to defend their tournament title from a year ago at the par-72, 6,074-yard Weibring Golf Club. The tourney will consist of 54 holes, 36 on Sunday, Sept. 8 and 18 on Monday, Sept. 9.
Reigning Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year Sathika Ruenreong is expected to lead UT after posting a team-best 76.7 stroke average en route to earning first-team all-conference accolades. She will be joined in Toledo's lineup by senior Kate Hoops, a 2012-13 second-team All-MAC honoree, as well as juniors Jennifer Elsholz and Stephanie St-Jean and sophomore Manisa Isavas. Sophomore Morgan Salm is slated to compete as an individual.
"I'm really looking forward to this season and hope that we can build on everything that we accomplished last year," Toledo Head Coach Nicole Hollingsworth said.
The Rockets captured the 2012 Redbird Invitational with a 13-stroke victory over Bowling Green. UT will be joined at the event by four Mid-American Conference foes – Ball State, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois and Ohio – as well as Bradley, Drake, Evansville, Illinois Wesleyan, Oakland, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, Western Illinois and the host Redbirds.
Former Rocket Allison Schultz led UT last year by posting a career-best second-place showing with a six-over par 222 (75-75-72). She was supported by four teammates who each placed in the Top 31 of the tournament. Hoops and junior Becky Martin were UT's next best finishers at 16-over par 232 to tie for 15th place.
The scoring format for the two-day tournament will consist of each team fielding five players, with the lowest four scores counting for each round.
