The Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority (ECGRA) presented more than $150,000 to non-profit groups this morning at the Erie Zoo.
The grants were awarded to 21 groups that work towards improving the quality of life and adding to the culture in Erie. The money for those grants came from Presque Isle Downs proceeds.
The grants also aim to drive economic growth by making Erie more attractive to tourists.
"One of the areas we've really wanted to fund at ECGRA is place making - the idea that improvements in public space is really good for the community," said Perry Wood, ECRGA Executive Director.
"We're going to take the money and use it towards buying new playground equipment," said Janet Monn of Mead Park Association. Some of the parks' old equipment has caused preventable injuries in recent years.
"Our is equipment is about 30 years old, so we're really looking forward to getting some new and updated equipment for the kids," Monn said. Mead Park Association received $12, 120.
Another park improvement group, "Preserve Erie," will use their allotted $9,387 to start building Erie's first dog park.
A few other groups include the Baytime Maritime Center, North East Historical Society, and Gannon University.
