FedEx has just opened a new facility in Northwest Ohio. More than 200 people work at the FedEx Freight service center in Northwood. Freight bound for Canada will be moving through the Northwood operation. In addition to the international component they will also be handling local and national freight. While it didn't create any new jobs, it does guarantee hundreds of jobs and there is certainly room for expansion. The multi million dollar facility has been up and running since August and customers got a look behind the scenes look at the operation on Wednesday.
The service center is more than three football fields long. It has more than double the capacity of the old building on Manhattan Boulevard in North Toledo. Phil Harper is the service center manager,"Our old facility had 90 doors, this one has 188. We have plenty of room to grow and expand because we have 52 acres at this facility. We brought in more than 200 employees to start this operation." While those aren't new jobs, FedEx is well positioned to bring new work to the site. Grant Crawford is the Vice President for FedEx Freight International, "There are 220 people here now but as our business grows the opportunity for more jobs increases."
In addition to bringing freight to the Toledo area and around the United States, Crawford says the North wood facility is a gateway between America and Canada for what are called LTL shipments, meaning less than a truckload, "FedEx continues to grow across the border our Canadian network has been heavily invested in within the last 6 years. This hub is our largest into Canada. It always has been and will continue to be. Our growth has created a need for additional space."
Of course the new facility is good news for the tax base in North wood. Although the facility it replaces was in Toledo, North wood City administrator Bob Anderson points out that this move did keep the jobs in Ohio, "It obviously helps our residents and it helps us maintain our infrastructure. We are always working to bring in more industry to this area, we still have a lot of land and countryside and it is accessible to almost everywhere."Of course FedEx Freight leaders say location was a big factor in the decision to put the new facility in North wood. It's right along I-75 and very close to 80/90. FedEx Ground, which is a separate division, also has a package distribution hub in Petersburg Township that employs more than 400.
