There was gunfire near the US Capitol today, an officer was injured and a suspect killed.
The incident triggered a temporary lock down.
Law enforcement officers nearly had the driver cornered, after 34-year-old Miriam Carey made an attempt to break through a barricade outside the White House.
When the vehicle turned around, officers opened fire.
Carey, from Stamford, Connecticut, then attempted to elude law enforcement and drove off at a high speed for about 12 blocks before crashing.
The woman was shot and killed by police.
Her motive is unknown.
Fortunately, a child in the vehicle with her was recovered safely.
