After a season-long battle with the Cardinals for first place of the NL Central Division, the Pittsburgh Pirates will head to St. Louis for the final game of the NLDS.
Instead of clinching a ticket to the National League Championship Series, their ticket was punched to St. Louis for Game 5 of the Divisional Series after the loss on Monday night. And fans, took the loss pretty hard.
"I just wish it would have ended tonight, but it didn't happen," said Pirates fan Jeffrey Dombrowsky, of Erie.
"They couldn't get runners on base," said Pirates fan Patrick Schrey, of Erie. "It was a tough loss."
Fans packed PNC Park, hoping to see the Buccos clinch the Divisional Series, and continue their storybook season, while fans here in Erie packed the bars, to watch the game.
As disappointed as fans were, they still have faith in the Battling Buccos, heading into Game 5.
"I'm hoping we pitch Gerrit Cole in St. Louis because AJ Burnett's first performance there, but whoever they put out there I have confidence in our Buccos," said Schrey. "I'm going to be cheering for them here whole-heartily."
After Monday's loss, in a post-game interview, Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle said Gerrit Cole will in fact take the mound on Wednesday.
Even with this move, Game 5 has some fans reminiscing about the '92 game that started the curse.
"They had a winning record for the first time in 21 years, and even if they lose, it was still a great season," said Dombrowsky.
While others are expecting to see the Pirates play deep into Buctober, and are already talking about the NLCS.
"Let's bring on the Dodgers or the Braves, whoever's going to win that and let's get them next," said Schrey.
Game 5 is scheduled for 5:07 P.M. Wednesday, October 9.
