Government Shutdown Impacts Allegheny National Forest

Posted: Updated:

The continuing federal government shutdown is causing a major impact in and around the Allegheny National Forest. Campgrounds, boat launches and other public areas are now closed, during the fall foliage season, one of the busiest times of the year.

Workers at the Willow Bay Campground have closed the gates, and put up signs that say the facility will stay closed until the government shutdown ends. It means all the cabins and campsites are empty.

And it is the same story at all the campgrounds in the Allegheny National Forest. It means big losses for the company that operates the facilities.

Allegheny Site Management owner Ed Prince said, "I mean we are going to lose an estimated $30,000 just in camping."

The estimated loss to nearby businesses is about $75,000 per day.

Linda Devlin of the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau said, "It is the small shopkeeper, the person who sells gasoline, the grocery store owner. They are the small private business owners who will never recover this income."

While visitors are being turned away from the public facilities, roads through the national forest remain open.
