Free Depression Screenings Coming to Erie

Posted: Updated:

About one in ten Americans report signs of depression, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). On October 17th, depression screenings are coming to Erie, free of charge.

Erie County's National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has teamed up with Stairways Behavioral Health and Millcreek Community Hospital to bring the screenings to the Erie community. It is all in an effort to improve mental health services in the region.

NAMI officially announced the partnership and the screens in a press conference on Thursday.

While depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, treatment has proven to be effective for more than 80 percent of patients.

"The message behind our doing depression screening is to be able to give people an understanding that the way they feel is treatable," said Tim Paous, Director of Behavioral Health at Millcreek Community Hospital. "So if you are depressed, or if you feel anxiety, or you're having those kinds of symptoms, coming to the screening can give you the education you need, and point you in the right direction if you need it, for some sort of help."

The screenings will be on October 17th at the Lecom Wellness Center from 9:30-11:30am and 4-6pm.

Walk-ins are welcome and there's no registration needed for the private one-on-one screening sessions.
