Philharmonic Prepares to Start 100th Season

Posted: Updated:

The Erie Philharmonic officially kicks off its 100th season this Saturday at the Warner Theater.

We met up with the men running the show on stage and behind the scenes, to find out what surprises are in store for this centennial celebration.

Right now the halls of the Warner Theater are quiet and dark, but a tradition 100 years strong is about to restore the heartbeat of the theater, and wake up Erie's cultural senses.

The 100th season for the Erie philharmonic is met by a new executive director, Jeff Collier. "I'd love to see us sell out the concert hall every single concert," he said of his goal for his first season, one that just happens to be the Phil's biggest anniversary.

Collier is eager for the outcome of teaming up with Conductor Daniel Meyer.

"He brings so much charisma and excitement and energy to the organization, and so I'm really looking forward to working with him," Collier said.

The sounds of the Philharmonic will soon fill the halls of the theater once again. It will play like a harmonious history of composers, concertos and symphonies.

"I look at this as an opportunity to look into the past and look at the great things that have happened here in Erie and with the philharmonic," said Meyer, "and then celebrate the present... we have some brand new pieces that have been written just for us to perform."

He continued that he also wants to "talk about the future, and talk about how the Erie Philharmonic is going to continue to influence arts and music making and culture right here in Erie."

The season begins on an upbeat note, opening the curtain on a pops concert with featured guest Arturo Sandoval. He's a Latin Jazz trumpeter who will share the stage with the Phil, and a special duet with Erie trumpet player Gary Davis.

The Phil is also bringing an old favorite back to Erie this season; the Viennese Ball, but with a modern twist.

"Women would wear their ball gowns and their furs, and gentlemen would dress up in tuxedos and white tie and tails," said Meyer.  "We're actually gonna have musicians from the Philharmonic playing live Waltzes, and of course we'll have a dance band so you can do some Salsa and Cha-cha and some Big Band."

"We want to be bringing the orchestra to the people," said Collier, "and really make a great impact on people and be an inspiration to the Erie community."

The opening concert is at the Warner Theater this Saturday starting at 8:00 p.m.
