Questions Remain About Bayfront Development Plan

Posted: Updated:

The Erie Planning Commission tomorrow will once again consider a plan for a multi-million dollar bayfront development plan. But city leaders still have questions about the plan.

The Economic Development Corporation wants to develop vacant land near the Erie Wastewater Treatment plant as part of the inland port project. But planners say they need the commission to designate the land as"blighted" to free up state and federal grants.

The commission was uneasy with that idea last month, and delayed a vote. More debate is likely tomorrow.

Erie Economic Development Director Brenda Sandberg said, "The designation of blight is very specific. We may have emotional meaning or technical meaning but when you are looking at a vacant property on the waterfront which is our prime development area, the definition of blight may not fit in this case."

If the designation is rejected, planners may have to go back to the drawing board to come up with a way to look for government grants.
