In Pursuit of Big Win, Corry High Seeks Community Support

Posted: Updated:

State Farm, a hundred grand, and Kelly Clarkson – it all ties together to promote safe driving.

And Corry High School in southern Erie County is in a national competition to win that grand prize package, $100,000 and a private concert from Kelly Clarkson.

The State Farm organized competition is called "Celebrate My Drive."

"We care about kids, we care about our communities, and if we can prevent accidents, that's good for all of us," said Dave Herr, a long-time State Farm agent in Corry.

People vote online for their school, and each vote symbolizes a pledge towards safe driving. The school with the most votes wins the grand prize.

"As a school, we're not the most known. So it'd be great because Corry, a little school, wouldn't be used to winning something like this," said Jacob Sutton, a sophomore at Corry High.

On Thursday, Corry High was in spot 46 – four spots up from the day before.

The top five schools will each receive a $100,000 grant. The next 45 schools  will win a $25,000 grant.

Students at Corry High have been learning about safe driving all week.

On Wednesday, students were greeted by State Farm agents and Corry City police in a seat belt check.

They also drove a simulator provided by UPMC Hamot that gave them a firsthand experience of drunk driving, as well as distracted driving.

"I tried the impaired driving and it give a real-life experience of what it does and how impaired driving can really distract you," said Donald Buell, a junior at Corry High.

Students even put on Fatal Goggles (colloquially referred to as beer goggles) and performed – then failed – the heel toe field sobriety test.

"Anything you can do to promote safety with kids, it helps. It goes a long way with the district and the community," said Bill West, co-principal of Corry High.

People can vote for Corry High School at www.CelebrateMyDrive.com. The last day to vote is October 26th.
