Girard Football Team Shocked by Fatal Accident

Posted: Updated:

Girard's football coach and team members are react on Sunday to the deadly accident on Friday that killed two Sharon High School football players.

Sharon is the team they are slated to play in round one of the D-10 playoffs.

Four members of the Sharon Football team were driving home after watching another team's playoff game when their SUV swerved into the opposite lane, and crashed head-on with an oncoming truck.

Seniors Corey Swartz, 18, and Evan Gill, 17, died. Twin brothers Greg and Craig Osmon, 17, suffered serious injuries and were sent to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio.

The accident also claimed the life of John Zdelar, the driver of the truck. He was 50 years old and from Brookfield Township, Ohio. Two kids, ages 10 and 12, were also in the truck and treated for injuries.

The news was a blow to the community - a festive night of Friday football that ended in tragedy.

"They took it pretty hard. When we came in Saturday morning, a lot of our kids were pretty shaken up because it's one of those things that can happen anywhere," said Jim Funk, Girard's football coach.

""Every player we told, you could tell they were in a state of shock. It's terrible hearing something like this. Every time something like this happens it's just really emotional," said Buster Johnson, a senior and co-captain of Girard's team.

Saturday's playoff game between Sharon and Girard was canceled, but after tough deliberations, Sharon officials decided to reschedule the game for Monday.

"It will help give closer to a tough situation for a lot of people in this community," said Sharon's football coach Jim Wildman. "It will give the seniors an opportunity to finish or maybe play another game the way a season should end," he said.

Girard's team captain said he admires the Sharon team's bravery for the plans to play in Monday's game.

"I think it's really great that the kids are finding the courage to do that. I think it's very strong of them. It shows great character," Johnson said.

There was a vigil for the Sharon football team and the players who passed away on Sunday night.

The rescheduled game is for 7pm on Monday, Nov. 11 at the Veteran's Stadium in Erie.
