Seminar Focuses On How Criminals Use Social Media

Posted: Updated:

Facebook and Twitter are just two of the social media sites that millions of people use everyday.
And while they do offer a lot of great things for us, there is a dark side.

For the social aspect, or to generate business, social media can be a great tool.
It's also very convenient for criminals.

"Unfortunately it seems that every time we have something good, there's something connected with it that's got the bad side," said Joe Weindorf, board member of the Northwest Pennsylvania business Coalition For Homeland Security.

And that was the focus of a seminar Monday called The Darker Side of Social Media.
The Northwest Pennsylvania Business Coalition for Homeland Security hosted Monday's training.

It was geared towards area law enforcement, and the business and education communities.
Jim Dill conducted the training, he's a retired Investigative Technology Inspector with the PA Attorney General's office.

About 60 people attended Monday's seminar.

Local police agencies, business employees listened to Dill talk about how criminals use social media to capitalize on criminal activity.

"I think I find that what's the scariest and it's a fact how children can be victimized and are victimized through social media and the Internet in general," said Weindorf. "But social media seems to be a conduit for these folks, and unfortunately kids at a very young age have access to areas where they shouldn't be and the predators are out there waiting," Weindorf added.

Dill also told the group how they can fight back, how people can protect their businesses and how police can use social media as an investigative tool.
