"Turkey Man Program" Brings Meals to Thousands

Posted: Updated:

Erie Insurance is living up to their slogan of "Above All in Service" by bringing their service to people in need.

4,000 meals, dozens of volunteers, and 3 days makes for one happy holiday.

"For us who are fortunate enough to have good jobs and can afford Thanksgiving dinners, it's nice that you can provide that dinner to bring a family together," said Erie Insurance employee and volunteer Jackie Roddy.

For more than 25 years Erie Insurance has run the "Turkey Man Program", from a single meal many years ago to the thousands of plates they now fill.

Roddy started volunteering before she was married, and now she has children who do their part to help, too.

"I'm very proud of my kids... they donate some of their chore money for turkey dinners every year, so they each sponsored a turkey dinner," Roddy said.

"We're packing about 3000 boxes that Erie Insurance Group volunteers and donors have funded, and the Second Harvest contributed... an extra thousand," said Heather Musacchio who works for the food bank.

"There's 4,000 meals that are being packed and going out to the community, and that's a lot of families that would otherwise have been sitting at an empty table," she added.

The 4000 meals are loaded into big food bank trucks and distributed all around Erie County.

Before the boxes get on the truck though, they go through a well planned assembly line that's gotten pretty fast.

As the box moves down the line, it quickly goes from a cardboard receptacle to a cornucopia of Thanksgiving staples like corn, potatoes, and cranberries.

"Thanksgiving is especially close to everyone's heart, they're sitting down with their families and friends for a meal to share togetherness, and it hurts when you think some families aren't able to do that," said Musacchio.

"It's neighbor helping neighbor," said Charles Spach, an Erie Insurance employee who took over the program this year. "We are part of the community so we give back to the community. There are people out there that are less fortunate, this is our opportunity to step up."
