Ammo Shortage Troubles Hunters

Posted: Updated:

This Monday officially marks the first day of deer hunting season.

Hunters everywhere are reaching for that signature blaze orange but before they gear up and head out to the woods, they need ammunition.  This year, an ammunition shortage has made it hard to find.

The ammunition shortage is largely due to elevated gun sales and higher demand for the ammo.

Andrew Oldaker is a lifelong hunter.  Every year, he takes the entire first week of deer hunting season off from work.  The only reason he can do that this year is because he stocked up on ammo beforehand.

"I can't get any ammo. I'm a big deer hunter and I carry a lot of guns and ammunition.  This year, I can't get any," he said.

Using rounds from last season may be the only way hunters will have enough ammo for Monday.

Hunter, Kurt Hotchkiss, said whenever local stores do get ammo in stock, it sells out very fast.

"It's hard, I mean, you just have to wait," said Hotchkiss.  "Hopefully when they get it in, you're first in line before they sell out," he said.

Hunters aren't the only ones feeling the ammo shortage.  Dan Seaman, owner of Elk Creek Sports, said, it's hurting his business.

"When we run out of a caliber, people have to go to another store to find it or buy another gun," he said.

The Erie Sport Store's hunting department is usually stocked with ammo.  This year, we see some of those shelves are empty.

Rich Weber, owner of the Erie Sport Store, said, "30-30 has been a hard one to get.  Just keep looking at our website; we try to post whatever ammo we do have," he said.

So how are sporting good stores keeping ammunition on their shelves?

Dan Seaman said, "Two weeks ago I took a 330 mile drive around Pennsylvania to get the ammo I'm selling today.  I couldn't buy it through my wholesale chain."

Those hunters who only have a few rounds saved up from last year better make their shots count.
