The plans have been finalized and preliminary work is now underway for a major exhibit renovation at the Erie Zoo.
Architects have updated the plans for the $1.2 million facelift of the exhibit that will house two types of big cats, amur leopards and lynx. It is the same space that had housed polar bears and lions.
The only polar bear at the Erie Zoo was recently moved to North Carolina. Lions will be housed in the former gorilla exhibit.
Crews are now doing preliminary work, filling in the moats with stone. Major renovation work is expected to start next spring.
Scott Mitchell of the Erie Zoo said, "Well obviously it will enlarge both of the exhibits, make much better homes for our leopards, add a new species in the lynx and greatly improve the oldest untouched area of the zoo."
After the new exhibit area is finished, the focus will turn to improving the new home for the lions.
