Harvesting Grapes for Ice Wine

Posted: Updated:

The snow, wind and bitter cold were perfect conditions today for workers at Mazza Vineyards in North East.  It was the annual harvest of vidal blanc grapes, used to make ice wine.

Mazza has been producing the popular ice wine for nearly 30 years. And this year's crop of frozen grapes is expected to produce a record-breaking amount of wine, worth about $500,000.

Mazza Vineyards Owner Bob Mazza said, "So we are probably going to realize 10-12 tons of grapes which is the most we have harvested  in the 29 year history of producing ice wine here at Mazza Vineyards."

Last year, mild temperatures kept the grapes from freezing. So the juice was used to make "faux" ice wine, a similar but slightly less expensive product.
