Snowy Sidewalks Tough for Walkers

Posted: Updated:

If you have to walk to work, or to do your errands, it's been tough to get around, with all the snow on area sidewalks. One trouble spot is Peach street in Millcreek Township on the way to the mall.

It's especially a sore spot on Peach street where they've gone to the trouble to install sidewalks to make it easier and safer for to people walking to and from shops and businesses including the mall.

We went to check it out and this is what we found. It's true, some businesses are not clearing the sidewalks at all.

Off camera some told us they've received warning letters from the township in previous winters telling them to get those sidewalks cleared.

We confirmed with Millcreek Township officials, by township ordinance it is the responsibility of homeowners or businesses.

Some say it's not so easy, when streets crews plow heavy snow up on to the sidewalks.

General exterminating is one business that makes clearing the sidewalk a priority. But even they got behind with the heavy weekend snows, and saw how tough it was for walkers.  "One girl came around and our sidewalk wasn't done yet," said Shelly Davenport, secretary at General Exterminating.  "They went out, they tried to shovel, it was so heavy, I saw her go out and around, I though oh gosh, they were out getting the snowblower, she came through at the wrong time, we were trying to get it taken care of."

Supervisor Brian McGrath said, "We want people off the streets to use the sidewalks...we understand particularly with a storm like we just had, it makes that very difficult, but ultimately property owners are responsible for keeping those sidewalks clear."

All the businesses lining peach are up against the same challenge, some are following the rules, others are not.
