City Council Approves 2014 Budget

Posted: Updated:

Erie City Council today approved a 2014 budget. It doesn't raise property taxes.
But it does raise fees. Council unanimously approved the spending plan.

Both sewer and trash fees will go up next year. But the increases include a sunset provision. It means the hikes will only last a year. Council would then have to vote to extend the increases into 2015.

Council members also promised to spend a lot of time in the coming months tackling the problem of delinquent trash fees. Property owners, many of them landlords, owe the city about $2.5 million.

City council member Jessica Horan Kunco said, "We have talked about collection agencies. We have talked about selling the delinquents to a third party. So there are some options out there. We just have to find out for sure what is legal for a third class city to do."
