Rain Eliminates Chance For Holiday Weekend Skiing

Posted: Updated:

The holiday weekend is usually the busiest time of the year for ski resorts like ‘Mount Pleasant of Edinboro'.

This weekend though, two inches of rain washed much of their snow down the mountain, temporarily closing slopes.

"The rain has taken all of our natural snow," said Doug Sinsabaugh, Owner of Mount Pleasant Resort.  "Any snow we have left is manmade," he said.

Before warm winds and rain melted much of the mountain's base, Mount Pleasant started the ski season out strong.

Mountain staff members say the holiday weekend is always their busiest time.

"We actually had a class planned for this morning but it kind of fell apart," said Mount Pleasant Ski Instructor, Buck Tarvell.  "This is the make or break weekend for skiing," he said.

The mountain's base was manmade with snow guns; something resort operators cannot do when temperatures are this warm.

"We were near 20 inches of base," said Sinsabaugh. "We were in the process of moving snow across the mountain and building our base when this rain hit," he said.

The reservoir Mount Pleasant uses to make snow holds about 900,000 gallons of water; that reservoir has been filling up all weekend.

"A plus is that we'll have a lot of water available to turn the snow guns on," said Sinsabaugh.

Once temperatures get cold enough, rainwater from this weekend will be pumped at 500 gallons per minute to put snow back onto the mountain.

Owners of Mount Pleasant hope to have the mountain back open and operating in full swing by the new year.
