Posted: Updated:

Erie county has a new sheriff, after a swearing-in ceremony Friday morning.

John Loomis took the oath of office before a large crowd of family members, co-workers, and supporters.
Loomis has worked in Erie county law enforcement for 33 years starting with the Department of Corrections.

Before his election as Sheriff, he served as Captain for his predecessor, Bob Merski.
After taking the oath, Loomis thanked all those who helped him throughout his career.

"Some off the people that I mentioned, there's a retired FBI agent, there's retired captains from the Sheriff's Office, the department of Corrections, who I started my career with. Unbeknownst to me, their teachings and guidance was going to groom me for this day," said Sheriff Loomis.

Senior Judge John Bozza administered the oath.
Loomis worked in Bozza's courtroom for many years.
