Erie Police: Homicide Investigation Moving Forward Quickly

Posted: Updated:

An arrest could come soon, in the city of Erie's first homicide of the year.
A man is shot dead over the weekend, during a party on the city's east side.

Police say the investigation into this weekend's deadly shooting, just 4 days into the new year, is moving along quickly.

The victim is identified as 26-year old Rashid Anderson.
Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook says he died of one gunshot wound to the chest.
His death marks the city's first murder of the new year, happening less than a week into 2014, "This is certainly disquieting at best," said Cook. "Last year, our numbers were down a bit on homicides so I hope this isn't the beginning of a trend," Cook added.

The shooting happened during at a private party inside of the former east Erie turner's building at 8th and Parade streets in Erie.
Police say a man opened fire in the crowd just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday, killing Anderson and injuring 3 other people.
Detectives say there were about 200 people at that private party, and in the past 24 hours of the investigation, police have made significant progress in identifying a suspect.

"We've had some witnesses cooperate," said Erie Police Chief Randy Bowers. "Their (witnesses) information has allowed us to put together the story, a clearer explanation of what happened and we've focused on one suspect at this point," Chief Bowers added.

Police are also investigating a drive-by shooting at a home near 23rd and German, that happened shortly after the deadly shooting. A house was shot at, and police think it may be related.

If you have any information that could help investigators, you're asked to call Erie police at 870-1120.
