Pipes freeze, causing half a dozen water main breaks

Posted: Updated:

ERIE, PA - Even though we're done with negative temperatures, the "polar vortex" still had Erie Water Works crews working overtime on Wednesday.

The aftermath of bitter cold temperatures caused five watermain breaks throughout the area.

A large break on Franklin Avenue, (pictured above) broke early this morning and had Water Works crews working into Wednesday night.

Another break occurred just after 3 a.m. Wednesday morning inside the Applebee's restaurant on Buffalo Road in Harborcreek Township.

A break in the 7700 block of East Lake Road caused flooding and ponding on part of the roadway.

A 4-inch sprinkler line on the 6th floor of UPMC Hamot broke, a little after 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Around 8 a.m., a break on 41st and French Streets caused minor flooding.

Paul Vojtek, CEO of Erie Water Woks, said this is typical when the weather gets as cold as it has.

"Winters in the past few years have been a little bit more moderate ", he said. "I can't remember the last time we had a negative temperature in Erie and they really wreck havoc on underground water pipes."

Vojtek said to avoid pipes freezing in your home, pay attention to your meter.

"Even taking a hair dryer and blowing that warm air onto your meter can prevent it from freezing up," he said.

If you see the crews working to repair a break on an area roadway, you're asked to use caution as you drive past.
