More than 1,000 gymnasts showed their skills on Friday at the Bayfront Convention Center.

The 3-day-long "Stars and Stripes Invitational" is being hosted by the Erie Sports Commission and is one of the largest gymnastics shows in the country.

The participants, ages 5 to 18 years of age, are competing for a chance to qualify in the upcoming State Championships.

The main event will take place Saturday night and feature the highest level of men's and women's teams.

The invitational gives gymnasts from all over the area a chance to show the crowd and judges their skills.

"Everybody gets to see my personality and how I express myself," said 11-year-old competetor, Nyah Cheeks.  "I like to win but if i lose, that's ok too, I just know i have to try a little bit harder," she said.

Participating teams include: All Star, Arcadia, Bright Raven, C & Z Angels, Eagle, Flyers, Gemini, G-Force, Gym Dandy's, Gymsport, The Lakettes, Maverick, Northstars, Premier, Team Lightning, TNT, Ultimate, Uzalac, Victors and Xquisite.

The gymnasts will be competing until January 12th.  General admission is $12 dollars for adults and $7 for kids.
