Tragedy at Erie Zoo

Posted: Updated:

A terrible tragedy today at the Erie Zoo. A rare female Amur leopard is dead, killed by a male leopard.

The big cats had been together before in an attempt to breed. And that is what was happening this afternoon.

Zoo staff members and veterinarians were on hand as the 5 year old male was put together with the 7 year old female leopard. The bigger male grabbed the female by the throat and attacked her. She was gravely injured. Zoo personal tried to save her, but she died.

Zoo Director Scott Mitchell said, "For us it is emotional because we've never had this happen in the 30-plus years of my history here. But the species, it is an even bigger loss. This may be one of the world's most endangered cats. And to lose one of the most important breeding females is just devastating."

At this point, it is not clear what will happen to the male leopard.
