Twenty states currently allow marijuana use for medical purposes, and the Pennsylvania State Senate will hold a public hearing in ten days to discuss legalizing that option here.
Just over half of Americans support legalizing marijuana according to an October Gallup poll. But studies show that more than 70 percent of aAmericans support legalizing medical marijuana.
Out of Pennsylvania's 50-person senate, seven members have signed on as sponsors of the medical marijuana bill, including Senator Sean Wiley.
The bill requires a doctor to determine the patient's need for the drug.
"If we can make people's lives better in times that are very, very difficult with chronic pain and terminal illnesses, I think it's our obligation to do that," Wiley said.
WICU/WSEE took an informal poll outside of Erie's Blasco Library on the subject and found a mix of opinions on medical marijuana.
"I believe medical marijuana should be legalized. It does have some good qualities to it. It helps maintain things like glaucoma, other health issues," said James Eickley of Erie.
"I'm just 100 percent against all drugs. I have a son who died from drugs. Every one of them started on marijuana. Some of them will even say, 'I got off the other drugs, but I still smoke pot,'" said Debbie Harrison, a Clarion resident.
"I think it could be a good idea. I know several people that it has helped. If it's going to be legal for the people who actually need it, I say why not," suggested Kevin Siembida.
The senate's hearing will be held in Harrisburg on January 28th.
