Evangelist's Grandson Launches Rock The Lakes Erie

Posted: Updated:

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association is bringing a big outreach event to Erie later this year. Graham's grandson, Will Graham, was in Erie Tuesday to kick off the preparations.

The festival called "Rock The Lakes" Erie is a two day evangelism event planned for Erie September 27 - 28, 2014.  It's the last in a series of Rock The Lakes evangelism events taking a message of hope to cities across the Great Lakes. Planning for the Erie event has been in the works for over a year.

About 500 pastors, church, business and community leaders from across the region crowded into a luncheon at the Bayfront Convention Center, to share in the vision for the evangelism event.

Graham's organization says they're coming here, because Erie church leaders asked for help. "So people here in this area wrote to the Billy Graham Association and asked us to come help  do an outreach to your community, and so we're here at an invitation working with local pastors, businessmen and ladies to reach the community for the gospel of Christ.

"Even in this preparatory phase there's been a lot of activity," said City Mission Executive Director Rick Crocker who has coordinated some of the planning meetings.  "Church leaders, non profits who all have a similar burden for our region are recognizing that something has to change here."

Crocker is hoping this event brings church and business leaders together with a common vision of hope and revival.

Will Graham told us the difference in this evangelistic event and his grandfather's crusades is in the music.  "Music changes with every generation, the music will be a lot louder, more rock, hip hop, rap, but we're trying to reach a younger generation at the same time," said Graham.

Organizers will announce details on speakers and musical performers closer to the event.  It will be free and open to all.
