Gannon University Offers Scholarship Program for Low-Income Erie Students

Posted: Updated:

Gannon University will continue a program, helping area low-income students get a college education.

The university held a news conference Thursday, to talk about the success of the Archbishop Gannon Scholars Program.

Last year, 17 students from the Erie school district benefited from it.

To apply, students have to graduate with a 3.0 GPA or higher, get 850 on their SAT's, and have no financial resources to go to college.

If they apply for federal and state grants Gannon will then pay the rest of their tuition.

The program is already starting to see some success, "We're hoping that it's going to increase the number of students that we're able to enroll from the Erie School District although we don't have any hard numbers," said Bill Edmondson, Vice President of Enrollment at Gannon University. "There were 34 students last year who met the criteria and we enrolled 17 of them, so that's already a 15% yield rate, which is pretty good, " Edmondson added.

The program goes back to the University's roots, Archbishop Gannon who grew up poor, he founded Gannon to help the less fortunate get a good college education, "And thinking back at the foundation of Gannon and the whole basis of the University and how it came about, how can we look back at that legacy and develop a program that's going to help students afford a quality education, while living that legacy" said Edmondson.

You can contact Gannon University for more information on how to apply.
