Edinboro Walkway Opens In Time for Cold Temps

Posted: Updated:

EDINBORO, PA - Students at Edinboro University are enjoying the new pedestrian walkway, built to keep them out of the cold weather.

The walkway opened last Friday as our next big cold wave sent temperatures diving into the single digits.

The bridge is 508 feet long and connects the East and West sides of campus.

Radiant heating in the floor keeps the temperature inside the walkway at 55 degrees.

Edinboro's campus is known for being extremely handicap accessible; Edinboro University Directors hope the bridge will make it easier for students in wheelchairs to get across campus.

"For our students who use wheelchairs, it's a great improvement over having to travel all that distance out in the cold," said Director of Communications, Jeff Hileman.

Rough terrain, extreme cold temperatures and Edinboro's commitment to students with disabilities all played a role in the development of the walkway.

Students say the new bridge is a big step up from the old one.

"All the snow would melt so when we'd walk to class, there would be huge puddles," said Edinboro University senior, Alex Rodkey.

Edinboro University sophomore, Amanda Enders, also weighed in.  "It would flood a lot so it's easier not to get your shoes all soaking wet when it's cold out," she said.

Josh Doran is a senior at Edinboro University.  Before the new walkway was built, he experienced major flooding in the area.

"Just this past year it was flooded so bad that we couldn't even come over in this area," he said.  "Now if it floods, it's not really that big of a deal because we can just use the bridge to get to class."

The pedestrian walkway also has WiFi, security cameras and will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
