FMC Donates 3D Printer to Penn State Behrend

Posted: Updated:

Engineering students at Penn State Behrend now have access to a new high-tech 3D printer. The equipment was donated by Erie's FMC Technologies. The machine, valued at more than $40,000 will help Behrend expand it's course work and research.

3D printers can make lightweight parts faster and cheaper than using traditional methods. Basically, students can come up with a design on a computer screen and then use the machine to print it.

FMC Technologies Vice-President Jim Ertl said, "This technology provides development in minutes instead of months, literally. And that helps the students in terms of the learning process, and also the productivity for us in business."

FMC has a close relationship with Penn State Behrend. More than 20 students are currently working at the company's local design center.
