Free Tax Preparation and Filing Services

Posted: Updated:

United Way kicked off tax season with "Super Saturday," helping people prepare and file their taxes for free. More than 4,000 people use the service in Erie County each year.

It's a service through VITA that's extended to people of low-moderate income across the country. Anyone earning $52,000 or less is qualified for the free service, which will continue until the April 15th tax deadline.

IRS certified volunteers help make sure that people don't miss out on tax credits, such as claiming their Earned Income Tax Credit.

"It was very helpful. I appreciate everything they did. They helped me out, they were really good, they answered my questions," said Chellette Smith of Erie. "Stop in, come down, do your taxes, it doesn't hurt, and it's free."

Appointments are required at most of the tax sites throughout the county.

Locations include the Booker T. Washington Center, the JFK Center, MLK memorial center, Multicultural Community Resource Center, Widget Financial locations, and many more. Find the full list of locations below, or by clicking here:

For the Glass family at Silkscreen Unlimited, the ice bucket challenge that has been sweeping the nation takes on much deeper significance. In December of 2012, Roy Glass was diagnosed with ALS. “You don't really believe that it could be happening,” said Roy's daughter Lindsey Glass. “The disease just sort of takes hold, and it's a rampant decline.” After a 10 month battle with the devastating disease, Glass passed away. "ALS sort of becomes another family member,” said Lindsey. “It's somethi...More >>
