The cold weather has become a real problem for a family in an apartment house on West 6th Street.
Scott Heath called our newsroom to say his family of 3 has been without heat since January 3rd.
"I woke up hearing my son say, ‘Dad I'm freezing'."
Before that, they were without water for 10 days.
"We did 10 days without water then we had water for almost a week and then lost the water again."
Saturday, a hot water pipe burst, nearly burning Heath's 7-year-old son.
"He came out of his room screaming that hot water was coming, he said Niagara Falls was coming out of his ceiling," said Heath.
The majority of tenants living at Palermo Realty's 453 West 6th Street apartments have experienced an extended loss of heat, water, or both over the past few months.
Ny-Keesha Stewart, another tenant in the house, also complained of broken pipes.
"When the weather first started getting into the negatives, it was raining, well leaking in the living room," said Stewart. "Then it actually started pouring in the kitchen, it went from leaking to pouring."
The heat in her apartment is also barely working.
"The bathroom is normally cold, my son's bedroom is normally cold, it's just too much space to fill for the heaters to not be working," she said.
Both tenants said they've contacted Palermo Realty. Heath said he received an eviction notice and was told this is a minor inconvenience.
Heath and his family hope to move out soon, but for now, bundling up is their only option.
"We keep our hats and gloves on, keep our coats on. When we can't handle the cold, we go into the bedroom which is the only place we can contain heat, with a little portable heater."
We reached out to Palermo Realty, but so far they have not responded.
