Dr. Curley Speaks on Role With New Company

Posted: Updated:

Lead Kanzius researcher Dr. Steven Curley gave WICU12/SEE News an exclusive interview about the future of the Kanzius cancer research project.  Erie donors have been raising questions since the Kanzius technology changed hands, Dr. Curley changed hospitals and was charged in an alleged computer spying scheme involving his ex-wife.

Dr. Curley told our Lisa Adams by phone that his cancer research lab has had very little down time in the move to the Baylor College of Medicine.

Under the new company he co-founded, AkesoGenX Corp., Dr. Curley says he is pressing on to get his findings on treating tumors with nanoparticles and radio frequency waves to the FDA, in hopes of moving to human trials.

As for his role with the new company?  "My title with the company is Chief Scientific Advisor," said Curley. "I'm an unpaid member of the company. I can't receive money from them just as I never received any money from Therm Med (the original company holding the intellectual property). So my role essentially is just as it has been, which is to be the leader of this research to continue to push the technology forward."

Dr. Curley said he wouldn't be where he is without the support and devotion of the Kanzius Foundation and the people of Erie. But he told Adams that ultimately AkesoGenX will take over funding the research.

The Kanzius foundation has promised to continue funding the research at least through the end of 2014. AkesoGenX co-founder Dr. Robert Zavala is expected to visit Erie in the next 2-3 weeks to meet with the foundation about future plans.  We'll share more of our interview with Dr. Curley on Tuesday, including the future involvement of Industrial Sales and Manufacturing of Erie in taking the Kanzius technology to the FDA.
